Opening a Business in the Terminal
Welcome to Adelaide Airport
Opening a new store at Adelaide Airport requires careful planning across security, access control, staffing, training, operations, marketing and compliance.
To support a successful opening, Adelaide Airport has developed this Operational Readiness Schedule to help ensure all critical activities are completed before your first day of trade.
We recommend reviewing this page as soon as your opening date is confirmed and working through each activity in the recommended timeframe below.
8-12 Weeks Before Opening
Setting up your company within Adelaide Airport's security systems is one of the first and most important steps before opening.
All staff who require access to secure areas of the airport may need an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC). Background checks, inductions and approvals can take several weeks, so we recommend starting this process as early as possible.
ASIC applications are often on the critical path for opening.
Delays can impact your team's ability to access the terminal and commence operations.
Complete These Tasks:
- Register your company with Adelaide Airport
- Complete required company security documentation
- Nominate Authorised Signatories
- Establish your internal ASIC management process
- Identify which staff require an ASIC
- Confirm operational and access requirements
An ASIC and Security Access are separate requirements and must both be arranged before opening.
An ASIC confirms an individual has received the required security clearance, while Security Access determines which airport doors, staff areas and operational facilities they can enter.
Complete These Tasks:
- Complete company access setup documentation
- Determine required access levels for your operation
- Submit access approval requests
- Identify staff who require Security Access
6-8 Weeks Before Opening
With your opening date approaching, it's time to recruit and onboard your team and begin required airport training.
All staff requiring access to secure areas should have their ASIC applications underway and be registered for any mandatory airport training.
A store cannot operate unless an appropriately authorised ASIC holder is present.
Ensure key team members commence the ASIC process as early as possible.
Complete These Tasks:
- Recruit and onboard staff
- Submit ASIC applications for eligible team members
- Register staff for AAL Academy
- Complete Airport Induction
- Identify and complete any additional training requirements
If ASIC applications are still being processed, staff and contractors may be eligible for a Visitor Identification Card (VIC) to access certain airport areas on a temporary basis.
A VIC can help facilitate site access during setup and onboarding, but it does not replace the requirement for approved ASIC holders within your operation.
Important Information:
- VICs are valid for a maximum of 28 days
- VIC holders must be escorted by an ASIC holder at all times
- VICs do not replace the requirement for ASIC-holding staff to operate a store
4-6 Weeks Before Opening
As your opening date approaches, your team should be completing airport inductions and preparing for Security Access approval.
This is an important step to ensure staff can access the areas, facilities and operational spaces required to perform their roles from day one.
Complete These Tasks:
- Ensure relevant staff complete airport inductions
- Submit Security Access requirements
- Confirm required access permissions for each team member
- Schedule ASIC activation appointments
Discounted parking options are available for airport workers.
To ensure your team has parking access before opening, we recommend submitting applications as early as possible, as processing times may vary.
Complete These Tasks:
- Apply for staff parking
- Confirm parking access cards and arrangements
- Communicate parking information to staff
3-4 Weeks Before Opening
With your opening date approaching, now is the perfect time to start planning your launch with Adelaide Airport's Retail Marketing team.

- Understand Tools of Trade audit requirements
