Waste Management in the Terminal
Adelaide Airport Waste Streams
Organics
Bin Colour: Green
The Organics stream is used for:
- Food scraps
- Fruit and vegetable waste
- Coffee grounds
- Meat and bones
- Certified compostable food packaging
Where bins are integrated into the airport waste management system, certified compostable liners must be used.
Mixed Recycling (Comingled)
Bin Colour: Yellow
The Mixed Recycling stream is used for:
- Plastic bottles and containers
- Glass bottles and jars
- Aluminium cans
- Beverage cartons
- Paper
- Cardboard
Items should be empty and free from food contamination where possible.
No bin liner is required, although a clear liner may be used if preferred.
Soft Plastics
Bin Colour: Red
This stream is for clean soft plastics only, including:
- Plastic bags
- Plastic film
- Shrink wrap
- Soft packaging
Soft plastics must be clean and free from food contamination.
Where bins are integrated into the airport waste management system, a clear bin liner should be used.
Paper & Cardboard
Bin Colour: Blue
This stream is for:
- Clean office paper
- Newspapers and magazines
- Flattened cardboard boxes
- Packaging cardboard
Paper and cardboard contaminated with food or liquid should be placed in the Organics or General Waste stream as appropriate.
No bin liner is required.
General Waste
Bin Colour: General Waste
General Waste should only be used for items that cannot be recycled or composted.
Examples include:
- Contaminated packaging
- Non-recyclable plastics
- Disposable items that cannot be recovered
- Other waste not accepted in the streams above
Where bins are integrated into the airport waste management system, a black or red bin liner should be used.
Not Sure Which Bin to Use?
If you're unsure, please stop and ask.
Placing the wrong items into recycling or organics bins can contaminate entire waste streams and result in recyclable material being sent to landfill.
As a general rule:
- Food waste belongs in Organics.
- Clean paper and cardboard belong in Paper & Cardboard.
- Bottles, cans and containers belong in Mixed Recycling.
- Clean plastic film and plastic bags belong in Soft Plastics.
- Everything else belongs in General Waste.
When in doubt, ask for assistance.
